Side Event COP27 The environmental challenges and development opportunities related to the rapid urban growth

Sharm El-Sheikh, November 10th, 2022. What are the environmental challenges and development opportunities related to the rapid urban growth of the great African megacities and beyond ? That is the question that Italy and Rwanda have tried to answer today in the Cop27 context, Innovative Approaches to Restoration and Conservation of Urban Wetlands, The case study of the project “Sustainable Urban Wetlands Development in Kigali City”

The meeting, moderated by the director of the Climate Action and Inclusive Development Global Practice at Global Green Growth Institute, (GGGI), Ingvild Solvang, was opened by the Plenipotentiary Minister Dr. Alessandro Modiano, Director General for the European and International activity of the Ministry of the Ecological Transition, and the Director General of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, (REMA), Dr. Faustin Munyazikwiye.  

The case study of Kigali, the Rwandan capital, offered the opportunity to document the importance of urban wetlands, now highly endangered by human activities and rapid and disorderly urbanization, their crucial role in ensuring a healthy environment, in contrast pollution and the defense of biodiversity, but also the opportunities in terms of a sustainable and resilient economic development.
