Climate: MASE finances new emergency management center on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia

Initiative within the GIC project developed by e-GEOS, (ASI-Telespazio). With the new alert system maps in a few hours for rescue operations

Rome, September 19 - The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has financed, with a contribution of over two million Euros, the creation of a Center for climate emergencies’ management in Saint Lucia, (eastern Caribbean island), created with e- GEOS, (ASI/Telespazio). The center is currently operational.

The initiative falls within the scope of the "Geo-Information Center, (GIC), in Saint Lucia" project, which allowed the creation of an early weather warning system, (Early Warning System), preparatory to the management of climate emergencies that frequently affect the Caribbean island.

The system is able to provide pre- and post-event satellite map with global coverage in just a few hours, to support rescue operations following catastrophic climate events.

The Geo-information Center, (GIC), developed by e-GEOS, integrates the technological capabilities of the Italian satellite constellation COSMO-SkyMed, the data generated by meteorological radars, the hydraulic models and the company's capabilities in the strategic sector of emergency mapping.

The new Centre, operated by the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services - SLUMET - will strengthen the alert capacity in the event of extreme climatic events of local authorities, for the protection of the population and the infrastructure, providing a rapid assessment both before and following the post-event damage.
