Rome, April 27– Italy and Ukraine sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the protection of the ecosystem seriously damaged by the war, for environmental cooperation and sustainable development. The act was signed in Rome by the Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto and the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Yevhenii Fedorenko.
"We are close to the Ukrainian people - says Minister Pichetto – and we want to start cooperating for the recovery and resilience of Ukrainian ecosystems, greatly impacted not only by the effects of climate change but also by the war. It is in this spirit of collaboration and support – concludes Pichetto – that a cooperation on environmental matters, between our countries, is extremely important to give priority to the recovery of ecosystems devastated by war".
The objectives of the Protocol are framed in the three Rio Conventions and in the 2030 Agenda objectives, looking at the perspective of post-war reconstruction: the initiatives will concern topics such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, with the measurement of impacts, the monitoring of air quality, the defense of biodiversity, forests, soil, water resources, the circular economy, green education and the exchange of good environmental practices
The agreement is part of the broader framework of the Italian Government's commitment in reconstructing Ukraine, reaffirmed during the Conference on Reconstruction in Ukraine, held on April 26 in Rome between the institutional and business leaders of the two countries.
